David Huycke: A Cloud That Weighs More Than the Moon
Can a Cloud Weigh More Than the Moon?
An impossible thought.
In the exhibition A Cloud That Weighs More Than the Moon, Belgian silversmith David Huycke (Sint-Niklaas, 1967) explores how silver can give tangible form to intangible phenomena. His work moves between science and imagination, precision and wonder.
The silver pieces evoke planets, clouds, atoms or landscapes. From a distance, they appear sleek and simple. Up close, a world of hundreds of tiny silver spheres unfolds. The works invite visitors to look more closely, discover connections and form their own interpretations.
Hundreds of granules
For over fifteen years, Huycke has been exploring the possibilities and limits of granulation, a technique in which tiny silver spheres are joined to a surface using heat alone. Driven by an almost scientific curiosity, he has developed his own approach to this technique, bringing together craftsmanship, material research and artistic experimentation.
His fascination with the granule lies at the heart of much of his work. Some objects are decorated with individual spheres, while others are made entirely of them. Still others appear to have become one enormous granule. Huycke uses granules both as decoration and as a structural element.
First Solo Exhibition in a Dutch Museum
With A Cloud That Weighs More Than the Moon, the Nederlands Zilvermuseum Schoonhoven presents the first solo exhibition of David Huycke’s work in a Dutch museum.
The exhibition is particularly meaningful because of Huycke’s connection to Schoonhoven. After completing his studies in Antwerp, he continued his training at Vakschool Schoonhoven, where he studied decorative techniques for silver. His exhibition therefore connects with Schoonhoven’s tradition of craftsmanship and contemporary silver art.
